How We Transformed Lives Over Two Decades: 1999 to 2024

Last updated on by MRC

Two decades ago, rehabilitation in India was predominantly limited to treating alcoholism and drug addiction. While medical rehabilitation was well-established in the USA, this concept was not widely accepted in India, particularly for physical and neurological conditions. In 2001, the Medical Rehabilitation Center (MRC) in Kolkata, a pioneering pain management hospital, introduced its first rehabilitation center, integrating neuro-orthopedic treatment in the non-government sector.

Dr. M. M. Ghatak, a visionary Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) expert, recognized the increasing enormity of the problems faced by a person inflicted with stroke, brain or spinal injuries, or early life problems like Cerebral Palsy. The number of such distressed populations was increasing day by day throughout India and the eastern India & West Bengal circle was showing the same picture strikingly.

With a deep desire to bring hope to those with disabilities, Dr. Ghatak took on the challenge of changing the lives of those who had lost hope.

A Ray of Hope for Patients (2001 – 2010)

On 13th September 2001, MRC began its journey with a full-fledged rehabilitation center. The early years were very challenging, as the concept of neuro-orthopedic rehabilitation was still new in India. We had to prove our effectiveness by showcasing remarkable improvements in patients who had been previously told that “nothing more could be done for them”. We quickly gained a reputation as the last hope for stroke survivors, spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, and those suffering from arthritis.

Patients who were bedridden and believed they would never live independently again experienced life-changing results through our integrated rehabilitation program. As word spread, MRC became the go-to rehabilitation center in Kolkata and across West Bengal.

Expansion and Technological Advancement (2010 – 2020)

By 2010, MRC had evolved into a technologically advanced rehabilitation hub. With the addition of specialized units like urological rehab, Botox in bladder treatments, spinal interventions, and orthosis services, we further expanded its capabilities. The hospital increased its bed capacity and manpower to meet the growing demand, welcoming patients from across Eastern India and even Bangladesh.

MRC’s success stories began to garner media attention, with major newspapers and journals publishing the remarkable transformations of patients. The center’s ability to return people to their everyday lives—people who once thought they would never walk again—set a new benchmark in rehabilitation care.

Rebuilding After the COVID Crisis (2020 – 2022)

The COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult time for healthcare facilities around the world, and MRC was no exception. However, with our dedication, and commitment to patient care, we regained momentum, emerging stronger and more resilient. By 2022, MRC had regained its status as one of the best stroke rehabilitation centers in Kolkata, offering more advanced, technologically sound treatment methods.

Patients once again flocked to the center, drawn by its experienced and compassionate team, state-of-the-art facilities, and commitment to delivering comprehensive rehabilitation services.
