Any disease can be treated with medical care, but only a few medical organisations have the ability to heal a patient from within, fostering hope and promoting full recovery. While medicine and proper treatment can address physical ailments, long-term illness often takes a toll on mental health, leaving scars that linger. That’s why it’s crucial to heal both the body and the soul. For the past 25 years, this has been the mission of the Medical Rehabilitation Center (MRC). MRC has been freeing patients from chronic illnesses while instilling hope and resilience within them.
As a leader in integrated team-based inpatient and daycare rehabilitation in Eastern India, MRC has earned a reputation for its seamless medico-surgical integration and rigorous evidence-based rehabilitation tracking. Specialising in the rehabilitation of rheumatological and neuro-orthopaedic patients, MRC marks its 25th anniversary this year with pride and a continued commitment to excellence.
Twenty-five years ago, rehabilitation in India was primarily associated with treating addiction. Despite its global recognition, the concept was largely unfamiliar in India. This changed when the Medical Rehabilitation Center (MRC) in Kolkata introduced pioneering rehab centres focused on neuro-orthopaedic and rheumatology patients in the non-government sector.
Dr. Ghatak, a young specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, recognized the urgent need for comprehensive services for patients suffering from strokes, brain or spinal injuries, cerebral palsy, and chronic pain syndromes. With the number of such patients rising, especially in Eastern India and West Bengal, Dr. Ghatak pursued his vision despite financial challenges. In 2001, after months of relentless effort, he opened a full-fledged indoor rehabilitation clinic.
In its early years, MRC faced significant challenges proving the efficacy of its treatments, but it demonstrated that even patients deemed beyond hope could regain a quality of life once thought unattainable. Today, as MRC celebrates its 25th anniversary, it stands as a place of inspiration and healing, having transformed the landscape of rehabilitation in India.
At the MRC, rehabilitation is more than just a treatment—it’s a journey towards a renewed life. With a commitment to addressing complex conditions such as hemiplegia, cerebral palsy, spastic paresis, transverse myelitis, post-brain injury and other disabilities, MRC offers a holistic approach to recovery.
Each week, a collaborative discussion involving all specialities of the rehab team, guided by PMR doctors, carefully evaluates and plans patient treatment. This innovative group analysis and planning for the next course of the rehab program indeed enhances recovery by addressing ongoing issues and strategizing future rehab steps.
In recognition of these groundbreaking efforts, MRC, TRA General Hospital Kolkata, has been honoured with the Swasthya Samman Award 2024 by ABP Ananda. This prestigious accolade highlights its outstanding contributions to comprehensive medical rehabilitation, solidifying its reputation as one of the leading neuro-rehabilitation centres in Kolkata.
